Financial Impacts

Stephenville, Texas is planning on hosting the annual “On the Bosque” baseball tournament on April 1-2 which is projected to bring in about $300k to the city. This is all thanks to the Stephenville Sox Organization which is a 9u-14u age division. The first tournament was hosted in 2011 and only 6 teams were registered. Today, 50 teams have already registered to compete.

Deputy City Administrator Jeremy Allen explained that this event is almost as large as the rodeo events that the city hosts and it has a massive economic impact. Jeremy broke down each aspect of the event which allowed him to come up with the estimated economic impact.

There will be 50 teams at the event and there are 12 kids on each team. This means that 600 kids lone will be there then after adding family, friends, umpires, coaches, and spectators, the total estimated number of people would be 1,200.

A family of 4 that would stay in a hotel would spend the following amount on each item:

  • $300 on Accommodations
  • $185 on Restaurant Meals
  • $62 on Groceries
  • $50 on Concessions/Snacks
  • $50 on Fuel
  • $150 on Other (Sporting Goods, Souvenirs, Entertainment)

A family of 4 that would not stay in a hotel would spend the following on each item:

  • $185 on Restaurant Meals
  • $62 on Groceries
  • $50 on Concessions/Snacks
  • $50 on Fuel
  • $150 on Other (Sporting Goods, Souvenirs, Entertainment)

Jeremy believes that a party of four would spend anywhere from $500-$800 for a weekend tournament. Estimate that there would be 450 groups of four, and 225 of them would stay in a hotel and 225 would not stay in a hotel.

a.) 225 x 800 = $180,000

b.) 225 x $500 = $112,500

The estimated total for the weekend would add up to $292,500.
